FCPS School Safety Measures
Each tragic incident in our nation's schools freshly reinforces the importance of careful crisis planning and school-security measures. Each incident prompts us to re-examine our security procedures to see if there are precautions we can take to avoid a similar tragedy in Frederick County. We want families to know that we take school security very seriously and that every school has an emergency plan and training for staff.

FCPS works closely with law enforcement on school security issues. We reinforce with our students the importance of reporting behavior or statements that may be of concern, such as a student making a threat.

Programs are in place to reduce bullying in schools because we know that many times there is a connection between bullying and violence. Students who bring weapons or look-alike weapons to school receive severe consequences -- up to and including permanent removal from school.

We continually seek ways to improve school security. For example, FCPS installed additional security cameras and card-swipe building-entrance systems this year, and we're designing our new and remodeled schools to include enhanced security features. Also, this fall we provide emergency preparedness training for key administration and other staff.

FCPS appreciates and relies on your continued support of our efforts to provide a safe learning environment for our students and staff. We must be vigilant, prepared, and most importantly, proactive.
