School Counseling

The Essential Guidance Curriculum is based on the National Standards for School Counseling Programs which correlates with the Maryland Pupil Services bylaw for the School Guidance Program. Effective school counseling programs serve all students, and acknowledge that diversity and individual differences are valuable to all. The primary goal of the school counseling program is to promote and enhance student learning through the three broad and interrelated areas of student development. Those areas are: academic development, career development and personal/social development. (ASCA, 1997) The counseling program is delivered through individual and small group counseling, consultation, coordination, case management, classroom guidance lessons, and program evaluation and development.

Student Support Teacher Services

The student support program was implemented to assist school staff in designing student behavior management programs which integrate services from school, home and community agencies. Student support teachers and counselors provide crisis intervention and monitoring to provide positive direction for students with serious behavior problems.

Therapeutic Services

At Heather Ridge School and the Special Education Treatment Program school therapists provide group, individual and family counseling and intervention services for students and their families. They also coordinate services provided by the school system and community agencies. Students are helped to focus on self-management, self-esteem, social and behavioral goals which will promote success academically and socially.

Character Counts!

Character Counts! is an ethical decision making program that helps people make appropriate choices every day. The six pillars of character are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. The Character Counts! program has links to the following Frederick County Public School system programs: Service Learning, School to Careers, Safe and Drug Free Schools, Education That is Multicultural, Peer Mediation, Conflict Resolution, Pre-K through 12 curriculum.

Safe Schools

Everyone has the right to feel respected and be treated with dignity at Frederick County Public Schools. We maintain a firm policy that prohibits all forms of harassment. We fully support the Maryland State Board of Education regulation that states our schools must be safe, provide an optimal environment for achievement and be free from harassment. Reports of harassment or bullying are taken seriously and are responded to promptly and appropriately. Further information about harassment and discrimination policies and support services is available at local schools.

Maryland Student Assistance Program

The Maryland Student Assistance Program is an intervention program used in schools that provides a systematic procedure of early identification, intervention, referral and follow-up of "at-risk" students. These students are "at-risk" because of behavior which may be related to involvement with alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. Each middle and high school has a trained team which consults with the local health department or private agency adolescent addictions counselors as needed. Health department addictions counselors are available weekly at all high schools.
