Position: Network Systems Specialist I

Location: Technology Services


Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two (2) years experience specifically in Microsoft Active Directory administration, Microsoft Server administration including file, print and application servers, Microsoft application deployments and Microsoft Windows operating system desktop administration.
  • Two (2) years full time, direct problem resolution experience in a computer/network support position.
  • Experience installing and upgrading data/voice network cabling systems.
  • Two (2) years experience with Ethernet distribution hubs, switches, fileservers and network peripherals.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Microsoft Active Directory schema and group policies.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and problem solving skills required in working with other FCPS specialists, vendors and end user's of all ability levels.
  • Ability to use advanced electronic test equipment needed to diagnose and repair, network and desktop computer systems hardware/software and data/voice cabling systems.
  • Ability to use diagnostic software and procedures to effect timely and cost-effective repairs for a very large and varied base of systems. (IBM, DELL and Compaq PC compatible systems and network hardware and systems.)
  • Ability to function safely, effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and the ability to operate an FCPS vehicle in accordance with Board of Education policy.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), Microsoft Certified Technical Specialist (MCTA), Microsoft Certified Master (MCM) or equivalent certifications.
  • AA or BS in computer science or related field.
  • Experience with installation and setup of network peripherals and related software such as HP JetDirect.
  • Experience with Linux / Unix network operating systems.
  • Experience with network back-up solutions (i.e.: Back-up Exec. or ArcServe for Windows Servers).
  • Experience with installs, upgrades, troubleshooting and repair of HP and Xerox/Tektronix printers.
  • Current manufacturer's certifications from DELL, IBM, HP or Compaq for computer hardware systems.
  • Experience installing and upgrading fiber optic cabling systems.
  • Experience in a K-12 education environment.
  • Project management, implementation experience (Network and/or Desktops Systems).
  • Experience with Foundry, Cisco, or Alcatel routing equipment.
  • Experience with an enterprise desktop management solution such as LANDesk, Altiris, or Microsoft SMS.
  • Experience with VoIP and related infrastructure.

    Essential Functions:

    The Network Systems Specialist I position is a skilled position responsible for providing Microsoft server administration, network administration, software and policy delivery, and desktop management to 18,000+ desktops and 100+ servers via an Ethernet WAN. Support functions include Microsoft active directory network, policy, and user administration, software packaging and deployment, desktop and server management, maintenance and diagnostic repair of hardware and software, planning, installation, implementation, documentation and modifications to local and wide area network hardware and software.

    Reporting directly to the Network Systems Specialist II or the Network Engineer, the Network Systems Specialist I performs the following duties:

  • Planning, installation, configuration of Microsoft desktop and network operating systems, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Group Policies, server administration, desktop management, application packaging and deployment and associated network hardware and software.
  • Management of Microsoft network file and print servers and associated functions, including but not limited to: user maintenance, fileserver backups and printer setups/functions.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on network systems and peripherals, as required.
  • Work with vendors or systems integrators to solve installation, upgrade and modification problems related to Network and Desktop Operating Systems and Applications.
  • Responsible for building-wide network/desktop installations and other projects as assigned.
  • Install, setup, maintain and configure network and standalone "desktop" security software/hardware.
  • Install and maintain Cat 5e or 6 network cabling and provide customized modifications on existing systems to maximize the potential of instructional and administrative computer networks.
  • Install and maintain fiber-optic cabling systems (single and multimode), standards, configuration and testing.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade Desktop/Portable computer systems and associated peripherals.
  • Respond to requests for service; perform systems diagnostics and repairs in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a wide range of user technical levels.
  • Install and setup new hardware (printers, scanners and similar devices) on existing computer systems.
  • Provide support for user's requests related to upgrades/modifications to existing systems.
  • Coordinate hardware installations, exchanges and upgrades with appropriate personnel.
  • Install networking hardware such as switches including configuration and support.
  • Provide support and direction to building level Computer Coordinators and building based Technology Services Personnel and county-wide Technology Services Personnel.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all work activities and assist with documentation of processes and procedures.
  • Maintain an inventory of repair parts in the service vehicle as well as assigned tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Network Systems Specialist II or the Network Engineer.
  • Participate in training courses to maintain/acquire industry certifications, and to remain abreast of technological changes related to desktop computer systems, computer peripherals and user support.
  • Account administration to include creation/deletion of user accounts and password resets/changes.
  • Test, package and deploy software applications.

    Other Duties:

  • Report to work "off-hours" as required for systems installations and upgrades.
  • Work safely, efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision.

    Salary:

  • Support Salary Scale, Grade 13, 12-month position (260 days / 8 hours/day)
  • Support Salary $21.93/hour
